Yanks Interested in Arenado...Again?

NY - Well, this I did not see coming. The Yankees were reported to have had some interest in 3B Nolan Arenado at the beginning of the offseason, but after the Cardinals scoffed at the Yankees offer (Marcus Stroman), those talks ended.

St. Louis then took the next few months to talk to other teams, and even had a trade all planed out to the Astros, but that was vetoed by Arenado, who has a full no-trade clause and would have to wave it for the trade to be successful.

The Cards were also in deep talks with the Red Sox, a reported preferred destination, but it seems those talks have cooled down, a lot, presumably as the Red Sox try to sign FA Alex Bregman.

It was reported from a source close to the Cardinals last night that they have re-engaged in talks with the Yankees and another team not named, and the Yanks are apparently in the drivers seat.

This was really well played by the Yankees because they let the Cards FO get desperate in trying to trade him, and now might do whatever it takes to get rid of Arenado to make room for players coming through their system.

Look, I would take this move over what the Yankees already have. If you were to go around Yankees Twitter, you have people talking about him like he is IKF or Donaldson all over again. Now, I get the contract is bad, but if you are offloading a surplus, like Stro, and getting an asset compared to him, then its a win.

Also, I know the bat is not what it was, but the defense would be the best at 3B since ARod, and he retired 9 years ago.

I made a point on my weekly live stream, that Arenado was better in 2024 than Torres was, and I was correct. Above is their 2024 comparison and Arenado’s overall numbers were better than Torres, except for the On Base Percentage, which was only 5 points lower than Torres, and much better defense than Torres.

If the Yankees put up with Torres’ numbers, Arenado as an overall player is an upgrade at 3rd, moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to 2B, his natural position and thus, having a better fundamental infield in 2025.

If I were Cashman, I would 100% do my best to make this trade because Arenado is basically a Torres upgrade and a veteran presence on the team to help the younger players coming up.
