Yanks drop Game 1 vs. the O's

Game Notes:

Baltimore, MD — The Yankees took on the O’s for a 3-game set on the road.

Injury Notes:

  • No change in Giancarlo Stanton’s status. He remains in New York, continuing his ramp-up process.

  • Jonathan Loáisiga is still a few weeks from returning. He’ll need to appear in back-to-back games before that happens. Boone doesn’t see him as strictly a one-inning reliever. - Marcus Stroman is still managing knee issues.

  • Luis Gil felt good today after beginning his throwing program yesterday.

  • Scott Effross is preparing to throw live.

  • No new updates on JT Brubaker

First Inning:

  • Yankees take on Sugano for the first time, and load the bases against him (Judge Single, Bellinger Walk and Jazz HBP), but Volpe grounds out to end the inning.

  • The O’s start off the game with a Mullins single and a Henderson Double, but a Ruschman pop-up and strikeouts of O’Hearn and Mountcastle end the threat with no runs across.

Second Inning:

  • Yankees go 1-2-3, striking out twice.

  • Warren gets two quick outs (one on a really nice play by Jazz), but a 2-out single by Holliday and a RBI double, misplayed in Center by Laureano gave the O’s a 1-0 lead.

Third inning:

  • Yankees get runners on the corners on back-to-back singles by Judge and Bellinger, but Goldschmidt and Chisholm Jr. would both strikeout to leave runners on.
  • Henderson and Rutchman took back-to-back walks set the table for a Ryan O’Hearn Three-Run HR to make it 4-0 in the third. Warren went on to strike out the next 3 batters.

Fourth Inning:

  • Volpe drove a pitch into the outfield, but Mullins was right their to make the play. Wells became the seventh strike out victim of the afternoon. Dominguez makes some loud contact for a single inside first base, but Peraza flyes out to left to end the inning.

  • Holiday tried to bunt, but Wells and Goldschmidt combined to make a nice play. Lauriano would double, and the Yankee defense would botch a pick-off, advancing him to third and Knocking Warren out of the game.

    • All in all, Warren did not pitch bad, just made the 1 mistake to O’Hearn that was a 3-Run HR. The walks did come back to bite him, but it is nice that he only walked two. Another thing I want to see from Warren going forward is going deeper into games.

  • Yarbrough enters and walks Mullins putting runners on the corners for Henderson who strikes out swinging and he gets Rutschman to fly out to end the inning.

Fifth Inning:

  • Grisham leads the inning off with a Single, Judge strikes out (Sugano’s 8th K), Bellinger flies out, and Goldschmidt hits a deep fly ball that Mullins grabs to bring it back in, it would have been a two-run HR. Just one of those days.
  • Yarbough sends the O’s down 1-2-3.

Sixth Inning:

  • The Yankees go down 1-2-3 on Strikeouts from Jazz and Volpe and a Flyout by Wells. Some glaring issues in the Yankee lineup are beginning to rear their ugly head.
  • Yarbough sends the O’s down 1-2-3, again, really saving the bullpen and keeping the Yanks in the game.

Seventh Inning:

  • Dominguez leads off the inning by striking out, Cabrera would pinch hit for Peraza and he reaches on a single and advances to second on an E5, Grisham hits a single, putting runners on the corner with 1 out for Judge, who grounded into a forceout, and getting a run home.

  • Yarbrough continued to pitch well, getting a single, GIDP, single and a groundout.

Eighth Inning:

  • A Goldschmidt single and a Wild pitch advances him to second, where he scores on a Volpe double. Volpe scores on a Wells double making it a 4-3 game. Dominguez struck out and Cabrera grounded out to end the threat.

  • Devin Williams would come in and pitch a 1-2-3 inning, striking out one on 14 pitches. He was throwing strikes, which set up his Changeup, and the Airbender worked, getting swing and miss and weak contact:

Ninth Inning:

  • The Yankees would go 1-2-3, with a Grisham pop out and Judge and Bellinger striking out.

NOTES:

  • The Yankees continue to struggle with Runners in Scoring position against good pitching.

  • The Yankees struck out 8 times against Sugano, a season high:

    • 17 total whiffs - most for an Oriole starter this year

    • 9 splitter whiffs - tied for 2nd most by an SP so far this year

  • Yankees were 3-11 with RISP, leaving 9 on-base.

  • Yankees were able to rally against two of the O’s top relievers, Cano and Soto

  • Devin Williams looked sharper. Could the eighth inning be a better role for him going foward?
