ANAHEIM – The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels played game two of their three game set on May 28th, 2025 at Angel Stadium. Entering the game, the Yankees held a six-game lead in the AL East, while the Angels were trying to snap a three-game losing streak.

Injury Report/Roster Moves:

Notes/Analysis:

  • FINAL: 3-2 NYY
    • WP: Rodón (7-3) 2.60
    • LP: Anderson (2-2) 3.39
    • Williams (5)
  • Record: 34-20
    • The Yankees hold a seven game lead in the AL East and are one game back of the Detroit Tigers for best record in the AL.
    • 14 games over .500 is the most by the Yankees, so far, in 2025.

  • Carlos Rodón's Final Line:
    • 7.0 IP | 5 H | 0 R | 0 ER | 10 K | 0 BB | 105 P | 2.60 ERA
      • This performance marked one of Carlos Rodón’s most impressive starts since joining the Yankees. Nearly two years ago, Rodón left the mound in Anaheim blowing kisses to the crowd, sparking widespread criticism and raising doubts about his value as a free-agent signing. To witness his transformation into the reliable, high-performing pitcher seen tonight underscores a significant turnaround. Rodón had full command of his repertoire and was in complete control throughout the outing. It was also nice to see that he did not walk a batter tonight. In fact, Yankee pitching did not surrender a walk tonight.
  • The Yankees scored their first run on a solo home run by Ben Rice. It marked Rice’s 11th home run of the season and his 23rd RBI, tying his total from the previous year. Despite experiencing a slump in recent weeks, Rice continues to make solid contact and hit the ball with authority.
  • In the fifth inning, with one out, Cody Bellinger hit a deep fly ball to center field that outfielder Matthew Lugo was unable to handle, resulting in a three-base error. Anthony Volpe followed with an RBI single, extending the Yankees’ lead to 2–0.
  • Although Oswald Peraza has not had a strong offensive season overall, he delivered a solid performance at the plate in this game. In the fifth inning, he hit a hard ball that resulted in an out, but later took a 2–1 sinker to center field for a solo home run, increasing the lead to 3–0. Peraza also drew a walk later in the game, demonstrating improved plate discipline.
  • The ninth inning proved to be tense. Devin Williams was called upon for his first save opportunity since April 25. While he ultimately secured the save, the outing was far from smooth. He allowed a leadoff home run to Yoán Moncada, followed by a single to Taylor Ward. Williams then gave up a deep 380-foot flyout to Travis d’Arnaud for the first out, causing momentary concern. A single by Luis Rengifo put runners on the corners with one out. Jo Adell grounded out on an impressive defensive play by shortstop Anthony Volpe and a strong stretch by DJ LeMahieu at first base to record the second out. Williams then escaped the jam when pinch-hitter Logan O’Hoppe popped out to third base on a 3–0 pitch that likely would have been ball four. Though the appearance was uneasy, Williams completed the save. Notably, his changeup command was inconsistent, with several pitches left elevated in the strike zone that were hit hard.
