The Offseason has Stalled. What's next for the Yankees?
Yanks need an Infielder, and Bullpen help, but will they do it?
NY - The offseason for the New York Yankees is fully underway. Since the loss of Juan Soto to the crosstown Mets, Brian Cashman and his team have been busy at work to fill the void. From big moves like Signing LHP Max Fried and 1B Paul Goldschmidt, Trading for RHP Devin Williams and OF/1B Cody Bellinger to some smaller moves like Trading for RHP Fernando Cruz and Signing Jonathan Loáisiga back, they have made some big moves.
Now, some people, like SNY’s Andy Martino believe that the Yankees are a better team now than they were with Juan Soto and there is some truth to that. Now, I am not ready to say this is a better team. The lineup has a huge void right now, and that is in the Infield. It is believed that the Yankee organization prefers to have, but is not married to having Jazz Chisholm play at 2nd Base (Curry). So that leaves a void, at 2nd base or 3rd base.
Below are some options, pros and cons to each, separated by wether the Yankees have been linked to the player or not:
Linked to:
Jorge Polanco [FA] (2B):
Pros: Switch Hitter could use the whole field in Yankee Stadium
Cons: Had a sub-par season in 2024 and is getting old
Brendan Rodgers [FA] (2B):
Pros: Is a solid defensive player
Cons: Not a real offensive threat
Alex Bregman [FA] (3B):
Pros: GG Defender and a really good Clubhouse presence
Cons: The Righty bad does not play well at Yankee Stadium
Luis Arráez (2B/3B):
Pros: Very good leadoff bat and would help fill the OBP void left from Soto
Cons: Awful defender
Nolan Arenado (3B):
Pros: Gold Glove Defender
Cons: The bat has been on a steady decline since 2022.
Not Linked to:
Carlos Correa(3B):
Pros: Is a huge offensive threat and is very good defensively
Cons: Struggles to stay on the field due to health
Luis Rengifo (3B):
Pros: Solid bat and a Leadoff candidate
Cons: Has not played a full season in his Career
Brenden Donovan (3B)
Pros: Very good bat and a solid defensive player
Cons: Do the Cards want to trade him?
Overall, I think the best bet for the Yankees is either Brenden Donovan or Carlos Correa, but neither one is truly realistic. I think the most realistic is Jorge Polanco, which would be taking a huge gamble on wether or not his offensive production will hold up.
The other thing the Yankees are missing is a Left Handed Reliever in an already stacked Bullpen

.The Yankees have been linked to a few lefty relievers, but most notable are Tim Hill (formerly a Yankee) and Andrew Chafin (formerly a Ranger). Both are very good options, but I think Tim Hill is the best bet because he knows how to pitch in New York, and in the Postseason for New York as the Yankees begin their campaign for Number 28 (for the 15th time).
