LOS ANGELES – In the top of the ninth inning on June 1, Luke Weaver was seen sitting down in the bullpen as the Yankees held a 7–3 lead.

Following the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated that Weaver “felt something” in his hamstring while stretching. Weaver had taken over as the team’s closer in September 2024 after Clay Holmes struggled in the role and later reclaimed the position when Devin Williams faltered at the start of his Yankees tenure this season.

The Yankees will be hoping the issue is minor, given Weaver’s importance to the back end of their bullpen.

UPDATED June 3rd, 9:45 am:

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported last night that the New York Yankees are placing right-handed reliever Luke Weaver on the injured list with a hamstring strain. Initial evaluations suggest that Weaver could miss up to six weeks, though an official timetable for his return has not yet been confirmed (Passan, 2025). The injury, while a significant loss for the Yankees’ bullpen, comes at a more manageable point in the season—early June—allowing time for recovery ahead of the postseason push.

Weaver has been the Yankees’ most consistent and dependable reliever since the start of the 2024 season, anchoring the bullpen in high-leverage situations. His absence will create a substantial void, particularly given the club's reliance on his dominance in late-game scenarios. In the interim, it is widely assumed that Devin Williams will reassume the closer’s role. Williams has had a rocky stretch in 2025, including a blown save last Tuesday in Anaheim, where he surrendered two earned runs in the ninth inning. However, there is some optimism surrounding his recent form, as he has not allowed a run in 11 of his last 13 appearances, suggesting he may be settling into a more effective rhythm at the right time.
