Jazz to move back to Third

SOMERSET – Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. began what appears to be a brief rehab assignment during the Patriots’ 12–0 win over the RubberDucks (Cleveland affiliate). Chisholm went 2-for-3 with a walk, single, double, and a groundout over five innings, all while playing third base—a notable shift from his typical role.
When speaking to reporters about the position change, Chisholm explained, “[Boone] told me that he wanted me at 3B. He really wanted me at 3B. I’m a team guy, I’m here to win a ring, I’m not here to fight over positions.” He added that he has “always wanted to play third,” citing inspiration from his childhood: “As a kid, I grew up as an A-Rod fan. I wore 13 and 3 all the time as a kid”.
This move appears to be strategic. First, it may be designed to keep DJ LeMahieu healthy and comfortable at second base while still maintaining his presence in the lineup, for now. Second, the trade market for right-handed hitting second basemen is deeper than that for third basemen. Yankees GM Brian Cashman recently noted the team is exploring infield and pitching upgrades—both starting and relief—heading into the trade deadline, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The Yankees expect Chisholm Jr. to return to the lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Guardians at Yankee Stadium.
