Jazz Appeals his Suspension

Tampa, FLA — On Thursday night’s 6-3 win over the Rays, Yankees second baseman was ejected by Home Plate umpire John Bacon for arguing Balls and Strikes. Bacon, who was inconsistent all night long, called a 3-2 pitch, that was well below the zone strike three ending Chisholm’s at-bat, and the ejection his night.

After the ejection, Jazz took his frustrations to X tweeting out “Not even Fucking close”, referring to the call. This violates the MLB CBA rule about players using technology during games.

As a punishment for the ejection and the tweet, Chisholm subsequently received an undisclosed fine (suspected to be $5,000) from MLB and a suspension, which he is appealing.

When Chisholm met with reporters earlier today, he spoke about why he is appealing his suspension saying:

"I feel like we should be able to say whatever we want to say,"

Chisholm also spoke about a “grey area” in the rule, because even though he tweeted while the game was still going on, had just been ejected so he was not in it anymore.

His hearing will be this upcoming Thursday, so he should remain active for the Yankees until then.

My take on this:

  1. Jazz was 100% correct about the call, it was really low. I ran a report on the Umpire right after the final out and he missed 12 calls between both sides, but the pitch to Jazz was one of the more egregious calls.
  1. He should not have sent out the tweet. MLB has rules not only about technology during games, but specifically posting about an Umpire’s performance, which Jazz directly violated. (Note: Manager Aaron Boone mentioned yesterday that he spoke to Jazz about the tweet, calling it a “no”, meaning that can’t happen)
